Connecticut Secret Route List

"Secret" routes are numbered routes maintained by the state, but not signposted. These routes are numbered in the 400s through 900s. Signed "non-secret" routes are numbered in the 300s and lower. Most secret routes are less than a mile long. For more information and history, see Secret Routes Explained.

This page is a terse listing of all those I've discovered: 481 numbers in all, most used more than once. Not all of them are very interesting (and some of my information is very scant), but I provide more background on some prominent ones in the 400s, 500s, 600s, 700s, 800s, and 900s and 1000s.

Key

If a route appears multiple times, then its definition has been changed (or its number re-used).
Dates are in the U.S. style: month/day/year. Exact dates are "as of" date in a route change notice, or date the DOT announces the change to a town
"19xx": date not known. The spreadsheet (see Sources) starts in 1933, so I suspect many of the missing early dates will be the start of the modern numbering in 1932.
If "from" is "now": this route still exists today. The route number is also shown in bold text.
"became CT 123": the former route was changed into CT 123 (in whole or part)
"now CT 123": the former route saw one or more changes before its eventual CT 123 designation
"conflict": multiple sources (or even a single source) give differing dates, numbers or location for this route
E, W, S, N, etc: directions
"SL": state line
"TL": town line

I've collected these routes from official Connecticut highway logs, town maps, state highway department documents, newspaper articles, and "the Spreadsheet": a nearly complete list of route changes from 1933 to 2000. I've even spotted some routes on commercial maps that have blown their cover. Before I had found these sources, however, Neil Kelly provided me dozens of street names from maps he found, and Paul Schlictman added "dates spotted" for several other routes. Hats off to them both.

Sometimes official sources conflict with each other (or even internally). Some information on 1930s routes may be difficult or impossible to obtain; in that case, "somewhere in (town name)" may be all I have.

670: Prospect St (probably Prospect Hill Rd) and Main St, from Brook St to CT 215; 0.45 mi
670A: Ward Avenue, 0.21 mi; (next to Mosher St)
670B: Mosher St, 0.12 mi. (crosses railway on bridge)

Above I have 670 is now part of CT 215; 670A is Elm St; 670B is Main St.

Although reclassification established a numbering system based on districts, the following routes happened to be in the right place and kept their old numbers:
