Bugs
- Fonts are coming up a little screwy in Java 1.1 - Helvetica 8 is showing up as Flyspeck 3.
- Netscape 3.0 on Solaris seems to think fonts are twice as tall as they really are, making
route markers and signs too high.
Limitations
With all the limitations, you might wonder if Matr would be any fun at
all. (Answer: it still is). But I'll be honest and tell you what Matr
can't do yet, and what it will (probably) never do.
Temporary Limitations (MATR 1.1)
- General
- No undo function.
- Can't save your work.
- Roads
- No bridges, medians, turning lanes, or freeways.
- No bridges over water.
- Terrain
- Ground is flat. You'll have 3-D terrain later!
- Cannot create rivers or lakes.
- Political/Social
- Cannot create new towns.
- You can't move town boundaries (but you can rename towns).
- No buildings, trees, or other nonroad features. Yet.
- Map
- Can't print map (need to screen capture and print from paint app)
- Town names don't scale and can overprint other info (zoom to work around).
- Map doesn't show street names.
- Signs
- Cannot create custom road signs.
- Signs don't show town destinations for routes. (Future Matr will automatically
know that route 5 goes to Feenville, for example).
Permanent Limitations
- Limited to 1023 routes and 1023 street names.
- Only one class of numbered highway (one marker type).
- Highway names can only be positive integers (namely, no letters).
- Only certain types of intersection allowed; see technical info.
- Can only overlap two routes at a time.
- SignMaker technology won't be used for sign display... not until Java and/or
computers speed up a lot. SignMaker is pretty, but it's slow, and Matr
already has a lot of stuff going on.
