From c. 1940 to 1963, Route 176A was designated along Main Street and South Street, from Hartford Avenue (Route 176) in Newington to New Britain Avenue (former US 6) in West Hartford. Before 1940, this was part of Route 176.

In 1963, Route 176A was turned over to the towns.
